Air travel options out of the Red Deer Regional Airport are expanding to one more point north as of Dec. 1.

Northwestern Air will travel non-stop between Red Deer and Grande Prairie four days a week departing at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from the local terminal. Travelling south, flights will leave at 9:30 a.m. on the same days to arrive at 10:45 a.m.

“The addition of the Northwestern Air flights is an important step for Central Alberta and our regional airport,” said RJ Steenstra, chief executive officer for the Red Deer Airport Authority. “Adding another link within the province is great business news for both the Grande Prairie and Red Deer regions.”

He added the airline has been looking to expand its service within the Alberta marketplace and the new option is an important step in that direction.

“We have a long and very successful partnership with the Red Deer Airport Authority and the surrounding communities and we are excited to see our offering from the airport continue to grow," said Ty Roberts, general manager of Northwestern Air.

Steenstra added the airport continues to be committed and focused on serving Central Alberta's needs, while looking to maximize the partnership between Red Deer County, the City of Red Deer, and Innisfail and area.

“The Grande Prairie route is one more reason we are looking to implement our 20-year master plan,” said Steenstra, adding there is a strong positive momentum building in the region.
