PENHOLD – Various businesses, banks, clubs and services gathered at the Penhold Regional Multiplex for Penhold's Discovery Night.

Forty different service groups like Joy's School of Dance, Penhold Church of Hope, and Penhold and District Museum Society, along with regional agencies such as the local fire and police, set up information booths in the multiplex gymnasium on Aug. 15 to talk with locals and showcase what the community has to offer.

With many new families moving into the area, Penhold mayor Dennis Cooper wants people to know the town is a complete community, rather than just a drive-through town.

“Let's make Penhold a destination,” he said.

For Cooper, the info night is a great chance for people to see what services are available in the community and surrounding areas. It's also a great chance for him and other town council members to talk with residents and newcomers about their concerns and thoughts about the town.

Cooper said they are constantly growing as a community and he wants people to take advantage of the many services they have to offer.

Town council members were also on hand, rolling up their sleeves, serving hamburgers to residents who stopped by the event.

Councillor Michael Yargeau was at the event meeting new people and talking with the locals. He said it's important to not just be at council meetings, but at family events like Discovery Night because many people are there and interacting with the community.

“It's always been our goal to reach out,” he said.

For Yargeau, it's important to always listen to what the town is thinking and what they want to see for the community moving forward.

“It's a good opportunity to meet and interact with the community,” he said.

Resident Jessica Frisby said it's worthwhile for citizens to be aware the town provides interactive events like Discovery Night where they can come with their families to see what is happening in her community and talk to local businesses and councillors.

With her two kids, she said it's difficult for her to attend more formal events like town council meetings, but coming to community social events with engaging and fun environments like Discovery Night allow her to stay up-to-date with her community while spending time with her family.

“It's something my kids can enjoy too,” she said.
