The Innisfail Middle School gymnasium rocked with the sound of trumpets, clarinets, French horns and Christmas music on Dec. 4 in front of more than 400 parents and students.

“This is the first time we have had a daytime band concert for the parents,” said Jay Steeves, middle school principal. “Looking around at the bleachers, it is good to see so many families come out and encourage our young musicians. It's good to see the students engaged in the performances as well.”

The festive concert included performances by the beginner band, as well as the junior and senior jazz bands, and the concert and senior bands. Tuxedo clad conductor and music teacher Chris Bushel was clearly proud of his students.

“All of my students have worked very hard and looked forward to this concert today,” said Bushel in between musical pieces.

Unlike regular Christmas concerts with traditional carols and songs, the bands performed newer songs such as the theme from Frozen and Michael Buble's Sway and variations on classical themes. While the junior jazz band played Moves Like Santa, middle school students busted their moves while students clapped along.

“Mr. Bushel has worked hard and long with his music students,” said Steeves. “Our band program is strong but we are trying to find ways to keep them interested in the music stream and increase retention in the upper years.”

He added that both students and parents are busy and carving time for band is difficult.

“We are trying to be more flexible with our practice times and like today, having daytime concerts,” said Steeves. “Music, like athletics can be a lifetime pursuit and if encouraged provides enjoyment for all ages.”
