INNISFAIL – There’s a tropical fiesta happening.

The Phil-Can Neighbourhood Association of Innisfail is holding its annual spring fundraiser at the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion on May 11.

“Our theme this year is a tropical fiesta, a dinner and dance for a cause,” said Grace Gresos, chair of the association. “The proceeds from this event will go towards the renovation of Our Lady of Peace Parish church roof.”

Last spring the Catholic Church looked at repairing the roof and members later discovered they needed to replace it entirely.

The project is expected to cost close to $600,000.

Parishioners took a recent vote on a couple of different roof designs and chose one earlier this spring.

Construction on the new roof was expected to begin at the end of April or early May.

In addition to a dinner and dance, the fundraiser will also include games, a 50/50 draw, a silent auction, a cash bar and door prizes.

There will also be entertainment throughout the evening, noted Gresos.

The local Filipino association has been a part of the community for seven years, said Gresos, noting it is the fifth year for the spring fundraiser.

For the past several years, the fundraiser has raised thousands of dollars for different causes, she added, including for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, the Innisfail Boys and Girls Club, Our Lady of Peace Parish youth group and youth conference, the Innisfail and District Food Bank, the Innisfail Seniors Drop in Society, and for evacuees of the Mayon volcano eruption in the Philippines.

“The Phil-Can Neighbourhood Association has continued to help the community for more than five years,” said Gresos, noting the support from Innisfail residents and local businesses that contribute to the success of the fundraiser every year.

“We are asking (the people of Innisfail) to help us raise the roof of Our Lady of Peace Parish,” said Gresos. “Together, we can provide help for today and hope for tomorrow.”

Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner and the event at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $25 and are available at the door or by calling 403-227-1724 or 587-877-0427. For more information visit Phil Can Neighbourhood Association of Innisfail on Facebook.
