INNISFAIL – It’s a time to celebrate the town's most special citizens.

The annual Mayor and Seniors Garden Party is set to take place on June 6 at the Innisfail and District Historical Village from 1 to 3 p.m.

The annual event helps mark Seniors' Week, which runs June 3 to 9 this year.

“Seniors' Week is usually the first full week of June. It’s to recognize our seniors and the contributions they make to the community,” she said. “We also want to say thank you to our seniors.”

In the event of poor weather the garden party will be moved to the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion, noted Bradbury, adding they usually welcome about 140 people to the annual event.

The outdoor garden party will include entertainment, fellowship and treats for everyone to enjoy.

“This is our third year serving pie and ice cream,” said Bradbury. “We get our pies from The Jungle Farm and our ice cream is donated by the Innisfail and District Historical Village,” she added, noting there will also be coffee, tea and infused water provided.

Entertainment by a Calgary band will also be a part of the festivities that day.

“We’re bringing back the same band that we had last year. They were fabulous,” said Bradbury, noting the band Silence In B'tween will perform classics and old favourites.

“They do a lot of the older music such as Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and Fats Domino. People really enjoyed them,” she said. “I thought I would bring them back because it went over so well last year.”

In addition to entertainment and food, there will be draws for several prizes as well as important information on a variety of topics for seniors.

“We’re going to have a resource table there again this year so people can pick up information on seniors' programs, upcoming events, as well as a newsletter and a community guide, explained Bradbury. “There’s going to be a lot of resources there for seniors.”

Allyssa Bremner, the town's community facilitator, will also have a resource table at the Innisfail Co-op on June 8 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. to celebrate Seniors' Week.

“The table will have information on everything from our programs (to) elder abuse. It will also have information on our new friendly caller program that we’re looking to implement,” Bradbury concluded.
