Santa comes early to village

The lights and glitter of the festive season are already in place at the Innisfail and District Historical Village, as it gets ready to host its annual Christmas at the Village.

The lights and glitter of the festive season are already in place at the Innisfail and District Historical Village, as it gets ready to host its annual Christmas at the Village.

Debbie Becker Matthie, manager of the village, said volunteers have been busy creating the perfect atmosphere at the venue's tea room for the annual event, which will be held Nov. 29 from 5 to 9 p.m.

She said Christmas at the Village is a fundraiser for the food bank and for the village. Folks who want to get an early taste of the upcoming holiday season only need to bring a donation for the food bank to join in the fun.

“We have been having this for many years,” said Becker Matthie, adding there will be a cash box at the village for people who want to make a donation to the village. “We will have Santa Claus there for kids to sit on his knee and ask him questions.

“And then we will have horse-drawn sleigh rides and the Joy's School of Dance is doing the concession and Tim Hortons is donating hot chocolate and coffee,” she added. “We are making goody bags for the kids a day before the event.”

She said the event will be held both outdoors and indoors. The tea room, which will have the concession, will be open and the yard will be used to entertain the public and to hold sleigh rides.

And if Old Man Winter should come back with bone-chilling cold the town has donated a firepit for citizens to stay warm.

“Cold weather doesn't matter,” said Becker Matthie. “Just dress for it.”
