The deadline is fast approaching for students looking to get some extra help with their studies from the Innisfail and District Ag Society.
Sylvia Mathon, on the scholarship committee, hopes once again the committee can help out everyone that applies.
“If you’re a student you’re in need,” she said of the society’s open policy that allows anyone to apply for funding. “If you’re going to school there’s always unexpected costs. Maybe you join a club or need some books,” she said as examples.
The society offers scholarships for students going into agriculture, trades, as well as a scholarship for those not pursuing agriculture-related studies. There’s also a memorial scholarship set at $600 for students who show community involvement.
The scholarship, in honour of Dr. Greg Ritson-Bennett, was started up this year and is one the society will continue said Mathon.
Last year bursaries of $500 were handed out to six agriculture students and $425 was given to 15 non-ag and trades students. In total $9,975 was handed out in scholarships on top of the $200 given out to students who complete green certificates at school.
“It will depend on how many people we have apply this year and what our budget looks like,” she said, explaining how much will be given out to each applicant this year has yet to be determined.
Any student is welcome to apply, but if they’ve applied in the past, they have to be a member of the ag society to apply again.
“Unless you’re going into your doctorate for veterinary studies. We’re flexible that way.”
Application deadline is September 15. Anyone needing more information is asked to call 403-227-2546.
Students will be presented with their scholarships during high school awards night at the end of the month. Other applicants will receive it in the mail.
