School's back from the summer

The sun was shining but it had hints of a cool fall morning as the public school students headed back to class on Aug. 30.

Chinook's Edge School Division students were back in class, and many young students at École John Wilson Elementary looked thrilled to be hitting the books once again.

Owen Mercer, a Grade 1 student, said he was excited to be back, while Taylor Peitzsche, another Grade 1 student, said she was happy to be seeing her friends.

“(I was) looking forward to coming back,” Peitzsche said.

Principal Jackie Taylor was out on the bus loop greeting kids as they arrived on campus.

She said part of the key for the year will be tapping the first-day excitement and making it last all year long.

The students are usually happy to be heading to school, but even those who are nervous usually settle in quickly, she said.

“By first recess everyone's ready and going,” Taylor said.

For parents, it's the very first day of school that's the hardest.

“I think sometimes that the toughest grade is kindergarten,” Taylor said of parents who are nervous for their new students.
