Innisfail Scotiabank is teaming up with École Innisfail Middle School for this week's annual Terry Fox Run.

Along with École John Wilson Elementary School, École Innisfail Middle School, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School and Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School, members of the public are invited to bike, walk or run five kilometres to help find a cure for cancer.

“Like last year, everyone is running together,” said Amy Weleschuk, small business advisor at Scotiabank and the 2014 event coordinator.

She added the theme behind the Terry Fox Run hasn't changed since it first began in 1981 to raise funds for cancer research around the world.

The local run will be held on Sept. 25 at École Innisfail Middle School, with a start time of 1 p.m. Registration will be available at the run site for those who have not signed up.

Last year's event drew more than 1,300 runners, with a similar number expected this year.

“It's all about getting together for a good cause,” said Weleschuk. “It's important for us to team up with the schools and do this together for the good of the community.”

Weleschuk explained that Scotiabank is helping the fundraising efforts by committing to matching the first $5,000 raised in pledges at the bank. People who wish to get their donations doubled need to submit the pledge at the bank.

“We held a bake sale on the day of the Tour of Alberta for the Terry Fox Run,” said Weleschuk. “With the matching funds from the bank, our total was $680 for the day, similar to last year.”

Mark Kemball, Town of Innisfail councillor, noted he was not surprised that the community gets behind the Terry Fox Run so strongly.

“He was a true Canadian hero, in any sense of the word, and his impact keeps on growing,” said Kemball. “While the school is in their third year with the run, our community has been part of the tradition for many years now.”

To encourage as much participation as possible, there is no entry fee or minimum donation to participate in the run. Donations are accepted, and runners can register online. More information can be found at www.terryfox.org.
