Seniors concerned over postal woes

The looming Canada Post strike or lockout has the attention of local seniors.

Many area seniors at the Innisfail Seniors Drop-in Centre, the Royal Canadian Legion and Autumn Glen Lodge, say it could affect them to varying degrees. But there are others who say it won't have any impact.

Eula Brown and Helen McKenzie both live at Autumn Glen Lodge and have their pension cheques directly deposited every month, and while they say there won't be a direct impact, they do agree any disruption could be inconvenient.

"Providing they're not out (on strike or lockout) too long,” said McKenzie, noting the labour issue could cause a reduced level of information for herself and other seniors.

"Where would we get our information from?" said McKenzie. “Letters, newspapers and parcels come in the mail.”

Innisfail resident Bill Carleton said the possibility of a Canada Post strike or lockout is not good news for anyone.

"I think it's terrible. I think it's unreasonable to be inconsiderate enough that people can't mail letters, can't mail parcels, can't contact (friends and loved ones)," said Carleton, noting he uses the service regularly. "I buy stamps there. I mail letters and parcels. It's a major inconvenience."

While a strike or lockout may not be the answer, he feels that workers have their rights too.

"If you worked for the postal department in any capacity, wouldn't you want a raise now and again?" Carleton concluded.
