INNISFAIL - Seniors in Innisfail are taking up art in its many forms.

A new program called Art Encounters 55+ is encouraging seniors in and around Innisfail to enjoy art, learn about art and participate in different art forms.

The program was created by Cindy Walker, the youth and adult programmer at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre.

“When people retire they don't want to stop learning,” said Sara Kepper, manager of the Innisfail library.

“We wanted a program that wasn't just about arts and crafts. You don't have to be a skilled artist and you can learn about different (aspects of art),” she added, noting participants learn about fine art and the history of art in addition to interactive art activities.

The program began in October and is held at the library once a month, usually on a Saturday, and runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Kepper said they want seniors and those aged 55 and older to experience art in different forms without feeling intimidated.

It is something that everyone can enjoy.

“A lot of people have been interested in it and are asking questions,” she said. “It's a very basic introduction to art and its aspects. It will be hands on as well,” added Kepper, noting they will be learning about art forms such as painting, drawing, sketching and collages.

Kepper said the library received a Family and Community Support Services grant to help seniors get to and from the program.

“We can provide free transportation for this Art Encounters program. All people have to do is call Associate Cabs and we'll pay for their trip here and their return trip home,” said Kepper, noting the grant funding also covers a portion of transportation for another program called Knit and Knat.

The total grant amount is $1,500 for the fall portion with the possibility of additional funding in 2018.

“We have enough funding to provide transportation into the new year,” said Kepper. “The program runs until June and if there's enough interest, we'll talk about continuing it in July and August.

“We want to get a group together who really enjoy it and then talk with them and see what they want to learn,” Kepper concluded.

If you are interested in the Art Encounters 55+ program or would like more information, call the library at 403-227-4407.

The next Art Encounters session takes place Dec. 30.
