INNISFAIL – With a new school year set to begin, academic achievement and learning is at the forefront at both schools and the local library.

The Innisfail Public Library in partnership with Parkland Regional Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month in September.

“September is always library card sign-up month. They come out with a new card every year. Last year was The Incredibles and this year is Toy Story 4,” said Tara Downs, library manager. “If you’re not a fan of Toy Story, we still have the regular library cards available.”

Library cards are $10 per individual and $20 per family, noted Downs. They are good for one year from the date of registration and can be renewed every year with the annual fee.

“Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” said Downs. “From early childhood and literacy development programs that encourage school readiness, to homework help and hands-on technology exploration, such as 3D printers and maker spaces.”

There are currently around 1,000 library cardholders in and around Innisfail, she added, noting the library also serves families in Red Deer County.

With a library card individuals and families have access to other important aspects of the library, noted Downs.

“Our library provides access to resources and programs for people of all ages and stages of life,” she said. “There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.

“In addition to books, we have a large DVD collection for children and adults and we have all of our online resources, which are pretty extensive,” she added. “We have audio books, e-books and e-magazines and we have educational resources."

Patrons are able to sign out library books, DVDs and other materials for a total of three consecutive weeks, noted Downs, adding they can renew them up to five consecutive times, providing an item is not on hold.

“We want the library to be a community gathering place. We would love to see more people sign up for a library card in September,” said Downs.

The Innisfail Public Library is open six days a week, Mondays to Saturdays. For more information or library times, visit www.ipl.prl.ab.ca
