RED DEER COUNTY - A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Monday evening for a portion of Red Deer County east of Bowden and Innisfail and leading up to an area near Pine Lake.
At 6:15 p.m. Monday, Environment Canada updated weather alerts across Canada.
The Aug. 12 update said meteorologists were tracking a dangerous thunderstorm capable of producing up to nickel size hail and flooding rain.
At the time, the thunderstorm was10 kilometres northwest of Wimborne in Kneehill County and was nearly stationary.
“Large accumulations of small hail are possible with this thunderstorm. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away,” the warning stated.
The federal agency advised to avoid driving through water on roads, and to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
