Snow-Pitch tourney on deck for Big Brothers

INNISFAIL - It might be a little early for spring training but that doesn't stop members of the Innisfail 590 Slow Pitch League from hitting the diamonds to raise money for charity.

The annual Snow-Pitch Tournament is set to take place in Innisfail Feb. 11 and 12.

"Everybody that comes out, comes out to have fun and that's our key focus. We get out, have fun and raise money for charity," said Curtis Hoffman, secretary of the league. "We play at the two small diamonds behind the (aquatic centre). We've got eight teams confirmed so far.

"It's for fun, to get outside, get some fresh air and exercise in the middle of winter," he added.

The Town of Innisfail donated use of the ball diamonds for the event free of charge.

"They have donated them every year. It's been fantastic. That's something we really appreciate," said Hoffman, adding they play in all kinds of wintry weather.

"There has been some years where it's been very cold and some years where it's been great."

The Innisfail 590 Slow Pitch League is a mixed recreational adult league that includes players from Innisfail, Penhold, Bowden and across Red Deer County.

"We decided that it was a good idea to raise a little money for charity. This year we're raising money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters," he said. "I think in the last couple of years we've (raised) around $2,000."

Hoffman said both participants and spectators enjoy the two-day ball tournament.

"It's difficult, but it's more fun to watch people in their winter gear trying to run around from base to base," said Hoffman. "We play in whatever the snow conditions are out there. We get some sandbags and spray-paint them orange so (the bases) are a little brighter and easier to see."

"We've had some great turnouts in the past," said Hoffman. "Everybody's welcome."

The tournament runs all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 11 and 12.
