RED DEER COUNTY –  Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Tuesday snowfall warning for the northern part of central Alberta was extended south in the afternoon to include Red Deer County.

A snowfall warning is issued in Alberta when 10 centimetres or more of snow falls within 12 hours or less.

Heavy snowfall is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, with total amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres, the federal agency said in a 3:52 p.m. alert update for the area.

The advisory was updated to include Red Deer County near Innisfail, Bowden Penhold, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Spruce View, Pine Lake, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Snowfall will begin in western Alberta this evening, spreading eastward through central Alberta by early Wednesday morning,” the federal agency said in the Dec. 17 warning. “The heaviest snow will fall during the day on Wednesday. Snow will taper off Wednesday evening.”

It advises that visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”

The 3:52 p.m. alert did not include Mountain View County or the urban centres near it.

Still included in the warning was Kneehill County near Torrington, Wimborne, Trochu, Huxley, Three Hills and Carbon.
