Innisfail's St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School, like Catholic schools across the country, marked the beginning of Lent last week.

This year Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday, was on Feb. 9.

“With Pancake Tuesday we're celebrating the last day before the beginning of Lent,” said Shane Chisholm, principal at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School. “This event is held every year and Shrove Tuesday is a tradition.

“It signifies the beginning of Lent for us and tomorrow we celebrate Ash Wednesday,” he added.

The pancake breakfast was a coordinated effort between the parent-school council members, staff and the Knights of Columbus organization, noted Chisholm.

Parents were invited to enjoy the pancakes and sausages cooked by the Knights of Columbus volunteers.

“We had a packed house here today. Four or five Knights of Columbus members were here volunteering their time and they did a great job,” said Chisholm. “Our parent-school council helped out and staff was here as well.”

The day is symbolic of the preparations and sacrifice many Catholics make during Lent. Students were reminded of why they celebrate Shrove Tuesday and the important message behind the annual event.

“(Lent) is one of the most significant times in our liturgical calendar. It's actually more important than Christmas,” said Chisholm. “We do focus on this in our classrooms when teachers speak of our Catholic faith,” he added, noting that parish priest, Father Tom Puslecki, also comes into the school to speak with students about Lent.

This year, in addition to teaching children about the notion of sacrifice behind the season of Lent, the school is also considering participating in community projects.

“We also are looking at generating social justice projects – doing good works for people around the community as well,” explained Chisholm. “We will be talking to students about what else we can provide. Yes, we are sacrificing, but what can we provide for the community?

“We have a twofold approach or a dual purpose to Lent this year,” Chisholm concluded.
