Students join for international music event

Lyrical and instrumental talent from three Innisfail Schools all joined together for the first time for an international celebration of music on Monday, May 2 at Innisfail Middle School (IMS).

The event was part of an annual Canada-wide celebration called Music Monday, which was created to promote music in schools and celebrate the importance of music in people’s everyday lives.

The event is also meant to join children together in song , and schools and musical groups across Canada all sing a designated Music Monday tune at the same time from their different locations across the country.

Students from École John Wilson Elementary School (EJWES) Choir and from IMS sang along as the IMS concert band, and the Innisfail Junior Senior High School (IHS) band played the Music Monday Song.

This is the first time all of those groups of musicians have sang together, said band teacher Chris Bushell, during the event.

This year’s Music Monday song is called Tomorrow is Coming and was written by Luke Doucet.

Students were encouraged to dress up for the day in the likeness of their favourite song, composer, or musician from any music genre.

“And yes, rock stars, pop stars, hip hop artists are all included in the category of ‘musician,” said Jackie Moorhouse, music teacher at École John Wilson Elementary School. “We embrace all music genres.”

Music Monday is an annual event and is sponsored by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada and is designed to promote music in schools.
