Students in Grade 11 and 12 at Innisfail High School have been rehearsing for their final class production of the semester.

“It's a parody of Greek theatre. It's called The Idiot and the Oddity,” said Rob Burton, a drama teacher at the school. “It's a funny little parody.”

The main character Polaris is a Goddess in training and has to help a mortal realize three truths about society, said Burton. Polaris is assigned a person, an idiot, and gives him several tasks to complete, which helps him learn something about human nature in the process.

“She manages to get this ‘idiot' to realize three fundamental flaws in society,” said Burton, noting that the entire production – both behind stage and on stage -- is by the students themselves.

“The nice thing about this (production) is it really is the students' own work – they own it,” said Burton. “All of the costumes, all of the lighting, all of the set and stage, the students put it all on themselves.”

There are 20 students in the grades 11 and 12 drama class and about 33 characters in the 30-minute play.

“There's many, many different roles and some kids are taking on double roles. It's a neat little play,” he added.

Students will be presenting the production to students in Penhold and Bowden on Jan. 19, and at Innisfail Middle School on Jan. 21.

Burton welcomes parents, fellow students and members of the community to an evening performance on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at Innisfail High School. “They're working really hard on this play,” Burton concluded. [email protected]
