INNISFAIL – Students at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School were strutting their stuff during their annual talent show.
The springtime event took place at the school on April 27.
“Students in grades 5 to 9 are invited to be in the talent show. There’s always singing and instruments,” said Diana Bushell, music teacher. “This year there’s piano and ukulele and there’s also dance routines.”
The talent show has been a part of the school community for about six years, said Bushell, noting there’s been strong participation from students in previous years.
The event provides a way for students to share some of their talents with fellow students, parents and staff.
“They always really enjoy watching it, they look forward to it and are excited about it,” said Bushell. “Usually we have at least 20 students, but this year there’s a little less. We have about 14 students in the talent show this year."
Bushell and fellow organizer, middle school teacher Jordan Hitz, oversee rehearsals prior to the show to ensure students are prepared and ready to go.
“These are things they work on in their own time (outside of class). It’s not something we do in the music classes,” explained Bushell. “Whether it’s singing or playing an instrument, they practise on their own time.
“We do have a few noon hours set aside where we’ll hear them rehearse,” she added, noting students must sign up for at least one of several rehearsals leading up to the talent show.
In the meantime, the school hopes to continue the annual springtime event as a way for students to showcase their talent.
“As a music teacher I’m a strong advocate of performing arts,” said Bushell. “I like to see the kids have a chance to get up and perform something they like to do.”
