Summer has officially arrived.

Innisfail and area schools finished classes last week, signalling the official start to the much anticipated summer break for both students and teachers.

Students at Innisfail Middle School, École John Wilson Elementary School and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School finished their school year on June 28, with Innisfail High School finishing classes the week prior.

Angela Wark is completing her time as vice-principal at John Wilson school and will move into her new role as principal in September. “I'm super excited about next year and have a new vice-principal to work with going forward,” she said.

Students finished their school year with a half day of classes that involved games, activities and learning what next year will look like.

“They were celebrating the hard work that they worked on all year long and are super excited about this summer,” she said. “They got to meet their new teachers for next year today too.

“We wish all of our students and families a wonderful, fun-filled summer and I look forward to seeing them all in September when we come back.”

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys school was also celebrating the last day of classes before summer break.

“We started today with an elementary awards ceremony. We honoured our kids for Christian spirit. We had a lot of awards for different activities and different achievements throughout the year and we honoured our elementary students, ” said Kelly Jacobson vice-principal. “Our construction company, Vectus, (currently completing renovations), gave a hotdog barbecue for all of our students.”

Jacobson noted a total of 15 classrooms that will be completely renovated and ready for students when they return in September.

“Kids are excited to get home, be done with the school year and spend some time with their families,” he said of the last day of school. “We wish all of our students a wonderful, safe summer, God Bless and we'll welcome them back in September.”

Several middle school students in Tina Chadwick's Grade 5 class were enjoying the sunshine and having fun outdoors just prior to finishing the school year.

“(Students) are writing well wishes for summer and happy thoughts in chalk on the sidewalk,” said Chadwick. “It's the last day of school and we're wishing everyone well.

“They are all very excited for summer holidays.”
