INNISFAIL – Susan Roy has been honoured again for her outstanding service to the Chinook’s Edge School Division.

Roy, who retired after 27 years as treasurer for the school division (CESD) in 2021, earned the Roy E. Cope Award for 2023 for making a significant contribution to the educational welfare of students.

One year later she is being recognized again; this time for her professional expertise.

On June 10 in Calgary at the annual conference for the Association of School Business Officials of Alberta (ASBOA) she received the Award of Excellence.

According to ASBOA, the Award of Excellence is given to individuals, which includes treasurers, accountants, communications and human resources staff in either the public and Catholic school systems, who have gone above and beyond the day-to-day requirements of their profession in the field of school business management.

“I am not at all surprised that Susan has been recognized by her peers at ASBOA,” said school division superintendent Kurt Sacher in a CESD public statement. “Susan was an excellent treasurer for Chinook’s Edge for many years.

“She was as committed to helping the people in our division as she was to ensuring our financial needs were well taken care of.”

Roy told the Albertan that ASBOA, which was founded in 1939 and supports 180 members from across the province, is making a positive difference in education across Alberta.

“I think the more you put into it, the more you get out of it, and the more your organization gets out of it because you're constantly learning from other professionals and other school divisions,” said Roy.

“You reach out to your colleagues and they always, always help . . . whether it's reviewing a funding formula or trying to figure out a different way to calculate grants.”

As for the professional recognition of winning the award, the soft-spoken financial expert conceded it was “kind of nice".

“Well, I felt pretty good about it. I know that we all work hard to do well by the association,” said Roy. “But to be recognized by them as perhaps having gone a little bit above and beyond was kind of nice.”
