INNISFAIL – A local man is facing arson charges in connection to an early November house fire.

Following an extensive investigation, Innisfail RCMP have arrested and charged 31-year old Joshua Cook with one charge of arson in relation to the structure fire on Nov 6.

Innisfail RCMP Sgt. Lori Eiler confirmed the arrest but could not provide additional details, noting the matter is now before the courts.

Cook was released by a justice of the peace and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on the morning of Dec. 13.

Innisfail Fire Department responded to a call in the early morning hours of Nov. 6 regarding the fire at 4708 – 50th Ave. in Innisfail.

The structure was a residence that was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Extensive damage was done to the residence as well as the adjoining garage.

Local Mounties were alerted by Innisfail firefighters to the suspicious nature of the fire and believe it was a targeted incident. However, they added it was also their belief the public was not at risk.

Citizens in adjacent homes were evacuated while fire crews dealt with the blaze.

Fire chief Gary Leith said the estimated damage cost to the home and the garage was between $50,000 and $70,000.
