Telus aims for 75 per cent construction in Innisfail

Despite an early winter storm, TELUS' fibre optic construction goal is still 75 per cent completion before the build season is complete for the year.

Despite an early winter storm, TELUS' fibre optic construction goal is still 75 per cent completion before the build season is complete for the year.

"We are making excellent progress on the Innisfail build to date," said Chris Garret, TELUS spokesperson. "While our progress is weather dependant, we are confident that we will be finished the total build in Innisfail by July of next year, which means 90 per cent of Innisfail."

The spokesperson noted that they are excited to be able to offer part of Innisfail fibre optic in the area of town south of 42 St. and east of 52nd Avenue with a more areas coming online in December.

"Our fibre optic network will be able to offer up to 100 megabytes per second which will allow our customers to access Optik TV and many interactive applications such as Tumble Books," said Garret. "Serious gamers will love the speed they will be able to access."

Garret added their fibre service would allow communities to offer services such as video conferencing between patient and doctor, and allow more flexible work arrangements for telecommuters.

"The investment of millions of dollars by TELUS into a fibre optic network that will potentially connect to every home in Innisfail is significant," said Chris Garret, a spokesman from TELUS. "We want to be able to offer the best possible service to Innisfail."

He noted that the service upgrade would be completed at no cost to the municipality and businesses in the area.

"This will be a huge benefit to Innisfail citizens and businesses," added Doug Bos, owner of Discovery Wildlife Zoo. "Just like in the case of O-Net in Olds, if we can retain our present business core and attract more companies because we do have a fibre optics network, it is a win-win."

In addition to their commitment to brining fibre to Innisfail, TELUS has been active in the community sponsoring events and community groups.

"Our TELUS Action Team works with communities in order to distribute funds to volunteer groups and projects," said Garret. "It is important to us if TELUS has service in the community, some of our workers should live and contribute there. "
