It only took 44 seconds for the highly anticipated toque toss at the Dec. 5 Innisfail Eagles and Stony Plain Eagles tilt for the first Innisfail goal to trigger the aerial avalanche.

Mark Bomersback hit the back of the net on the first shot of the game on a slap shot from right of the goal from Joe Vandermeer and Mike Wirll to make the game 1-0 - sending toques flying from the spectators onto the ice for the Innisfail Toque Toss.

“The Innisfail Eagles players and management were on board from the beginning,” said Jane Duncalfe, Innisfail and District Christmas Bureau executive. “They advertised it for us and despite the event being cancelled the previous week we still received almost a stove box full of toques for our clients.”

Duncalfe noted cash donations for the bureau were also received during the game, which is used to purchase items in short supply for hampers.

“Last year we were fine with gifts for all age groups but this year we are short in gifts for children aged 10 to 16,” said Duncalfe. “Our supply of games and books is usually better and we are having to purchase those.”

Meanwhile, the Christmas bureau executive noted that donations were starting to come into the storage facility with large donations yet to arrive, and the Charity Check Stop on Dec. 13.
