More and more shoppers today are health-conscious about the types of foods they eat and how foods are made.
Thanks to a planned interactive grocery store tour in Penhold, shoppers will have the opportunity to learn how to read food labels and make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
Penhold and area residents can join Harrison Blizzard, a dietician with Alberta Health Services (AHS), for a tour of Penhold Family Foods on March 10 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
“Harrison Blizzard approached us and asked if we would like to do a store tour,” said Jamie Seiyama, child and youth coordinator with the Town of Penhold.
This will be the first time the town has worked with AHS to present a grocery store tour like this, she noted.
“He'll be taking (people) around the store and helping them figure out how to read nutritional labels. He will go over things that are listed on the nutritional labels and how to choose healthier options,” said Seiyama, noting that more and more people are mindful about what they eat today.
“I think it's definitely something that people are interested in,” she added. “There's so many labels and words out there such as organic, non-organic, processed foods and ingredient lists as well. “It's about breaking it down to what it all means so that you can make the best choices for you and your family.”
The tour will include stops at all of the different sections of a grocery store including produce, dairy, meat and frozen departments.
Seiyama said they are anticipating a small group of people for the tour and pointed out the unique learning opportunity for local residents.
Based on feedback and success of the tour on Thursday, they will consider holding future tours.
“We're hoping for at least five people,” said Sieyama, noting a limit of 10 per group to ensure a personalized tour and the ability for participants to ask questions.
“If we get a good response we will definitely consider doing it again,” Seiyama concluded.
