INNISFAIL - The town is aiming to show volunteers they are truly a vital part of this community.

The Town of Innisfail will recognize their hard work, time and dedication during the 2017 Volunteer Appreciation Night on April 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre.

"We are hosting the night to recognize the contributions that our volunteers in the community make community-wide," said Karen Bradbury, community and social development coordinator with the Town of Innisfail. "It's to say thank you because the impact they have through volunteerism is huge in our community."

The town has presented the annual event for several years to honour volunteers for their work and highlight the important role they play in Innisfail.

Bradbury noted volunteers work in a cross-section of areas, including sports, community groups, churches, non-profit organizations, and arts organizations.

"They all rely heavily on the volunteer base," she said.

This year the event will include a buffet dinner, volunteer appreciation gifts for all volunteers, a couple of guest speakers and draws throughout the evening.

"Something we are doing different this year is a combination of a silent and live auction. It's called a timeraiser, " said Bradbury, noting that participating organizations will submit a profile detailing what volunteer opportunities are available with that organization for the year.

"You may have a lot of different volunteer positions with a number of organizations in the community, doing a variety of tasks," she added, noting that individuals or groups can bid on the items in a unique way.

"Instead of bidding cash, they bid volunteer hours and they raise volunteer hours. They have 12 months to complete their pledge of volunteer hours with that agency or organization," said Bradbury.

"We wanted to promote the volunteer opportunities that are available in the community."

All volunteers and attendees must RSVP for the dinner by April 19.
