BOWDEN -- Olds RCMP are still investigating a case in which a 58-year-old Bowden resident was hit by his own truck Monday morning as he tried to prevent a man from stealing it.
The victim, whose name was not revealed by police, was sent to hospital in Red Deer and was listed in stable condition as of noon Monday.
RCMP were called to the scene by ambulance personnel at 7:49 a.m. Monday.
"There were reports of a hit and run in relation to a theft of a vehicle in Bowden at 19th Avenue and 23rd Street," Said Olds RCMP Cpl. Courtney Harding.
Harding said witnesses indicated a Ford F-250 with a blue snowmobile sticking out the back of the truck dropped off a male suspect in the alley behind the victim's residence.
The suspect proceeded to break into the victim's truck, a grey 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
The F-250 left the scene.
"The victim witnessed his vehicle being broken into and stolen. So in an attempt to stop the suspect from taking his vehicle he was struck by the suspect in his vehicle that was just stolen," Harding said.
"The suspect fled in the victim's truck, heading westbound down the alley west of 19th Avenue."
"We do have witnesses that saw what happened. So they were able to attend to call 911 and provide first aid care to the 58-year-old male victim," she added.
"He was transported by EMS to hospital and is believed to be in stable condition at this time but the investigation is very much ongoing."
Police recovered the victim's truck a few blocks away.
When interviewed, the only description Harding had of the truck thief was "one male, very short."
However, she's hopeful RCMP may soon have a more detailed description.
"We had a possible suspect sighting out of Innisfail on another file. So there are possible photos coming forward from that investigation," she said.
The stolen vehicle has been towed for investigation.
Harding said the Bowden incident was just one of many reports of break and enters and vehicle thefts they received Monday morning.
