RED DEER COUNTY – Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a wind warning for Red Deer County and urban centres near it Thursday.

Strong northwest winds gusting to 90 kilometres an hour (km/h) are expected tonight, says the federal agency.

A wind warning is issued when there is a 70 km/h or more sustained wind and/or gusts to 90 km/h or more.

The alert is in place for Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Falling snow is also expected tonight. The combination of strong wind and snow may cause poor visibility in some areas due to blowing snow,” the 4:40 a.m. Jan. 16 warning said, adding winds will weaken by Friday morning.

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage,” the warning said. “Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

The warning was also issued for Kneehill County and urban centres near it including Torrington, Wimborne and Three Hills.

Mountain View County and urban centres near it are not included in the advisory.
