Winterfest in Penhold provided plenty of treats, activities, fresh air and winter fun for everyone.

Dozens of families from Penhold and the surrounding area came out to enjoy the annual event on Feb. 6 between 1 and 3 p.m. at the Outdoor Ice Shack.

“We've had lots of families come out. It's been a beautiful day,” said Melanie Willerth, community program coordinator. “They seem to be having lots of fun and they've all appreciated the free event that we've had today.”

Close to 60 people came out and enjoyed skating, outdoor games, roasting marshmallows and hotdogs over an open fire, enjoyed some hot chocolate and some quality family time.

“It's a great time for people to enjoy the community, come out with their families, get some exercise and have a bit of a party with the community,” she added, noting support from Penhold's emergency services personnel.

“We've got two firepits going with the fire department here supervising and Victor Tam (our community peace officer) has come out to show his support for the community as well.”

Tam was joined by Penhold firefighter Justin Graham, who also took in some of the activities at this year's Winterfest event. Both emergency workers shared time with families and spoke about their job duties and roles within the community.

“We're definitely helping out here today,” said Graham, noting the open firepit and roasting of hotdogs and marshmallows.

“We're also taking time to show the kids the units and some of our equipment,” he added, noting the importance of family-oriented events like Winterfest.

“That's why we like to take time to volunteer at these sort of events,” he said.

Janice Draper and her three boys were also taking in the sights and sounds of Penhold's annual Winterfest.

“It's lots of fun. It's a beautiful day to be out here,” said Draper, noting that her family participates every year. “It's a good family event to get everyone out and about outdoors.”
