INNISFAIL - The Central Alberta Woodturning Guild welcomes Innisfail and area residents to a free woodturning demonstration and show at the Central Alberta Co-op Home Centre on Saturday.
Members of the guild will be on hand to talk with visitors and display their woodturning skills.
The event takes place April 29 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"Woodturning is creative. You get to use very interesting tools and it's very relaxing," said Barry Ellis, vice-president of programming. "We meet the first Thursday of the month in Red Deer but we have about 10 or 12 wood turners from Innisfail that belong to the guild."
The club is now three years old and has 48 members Ellis noted, adding that this is the first woodturning event in Innisfail. It is being held to help educate the public about woodturning and inform local residents about the club.
"Central Alberta Co-op Home Centre has the supplies and equipment to support wood turners," said Ellis, noting details of the hobby. "You take a piece of wood, you put it on a lathe, it spins and then you take a chisel" (to create something).
Central Alberta Co-op Home Centre will have a free draw for a King Canada KVL mini lathe, he added.
Woodturning makes a variety of items including spindles, pens, jewelry, home dÈcor, kitchen items and Christmas ornaments.
"Anything that's turned with wood. If you look around your home, such things as round picture frames and candlesticks (holders) are all turned on a lathe."
