INNISFAIL – The Rangeland 4-H Beef Club is doing its part to help keep the province clean.
The Spruce View area club was one of many groups and organizations across Alberta to participate in the annual highway cleanup on May 5.
Club members from nine to 18 years of age volunteered for the one-day event.
“We were out from 8:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m.,” said Michelle Garrett, a volunteer parent with the club. “We cleaned the north and south sides of Highway 54 between Range Road 21 and Range Road 45.
“We’ve been participating in the highway cleanup for several years,” she added.
A large group of 24 kids and 10 adults volunteered for the cleanup, collecting numerous bags of garbage.
Garrett’s 12-year-old daughter Brooklyn is a member of the Rangeland 4-H Beef Club and said it was good to see youth out helping clean up the area.
“It makes me feel good that the roads will finally be clean,” said Brooklyn. “We can appreciate the clean ditches (and areas) now.”
Garrett said it was a productive day with about 30 to 40 large orange bags of garbage picked up along the sides of the highway on May 5.
She noted it was also a great learning experience for the participants.
“They learned not to throw out garbage and to discourage people from doing that as well,” said Garrett.
The cleanup day finished with a canine show presented by the younger 4-H members (know as cleavers) and a potluck lunch.
