Canada Post is offering free mail forwarding effective Friday (Aug. 2) for those affected by the ongoing Jasper wildfires.

Eligible residents can receive the free service for up to 12 months and have until Sept. 1 to register.

“Mail forwarding is an important service not just for ongoing mail, but it also provides a vital link with government and relief agencies going forward,” Canada Post stated in a media advisory.

“If you receive regular cheques through the mail, it’s important for you to register.”

A red delivery service alert was issued for Jasper on July 23 due to the evacuation, which means the town has no mail service.

Since then, Canada Post has been holding mail destined for Jasper at its Edmonton facility.

Mail forwarding will allow Canada Post to ship mail to a different address selected by the customer.

This can be done both on a short-term or long-term basis, even if the address is temporary.

Those with the following postal codes are eligible for the offer:

  • Fox Lake: T0H 1R0
  • Garden River: T0H 4G0
  • Jasper: T0E 1E0
  • John D'or Prairie: T0H 3X0

To request the free service, affected customers will need to either:

  • Register online using a credit card to authenticate their identity. No fee will be charged to the credit card.
  • Go to a post office with a government-issued photo ID (mandatory). Proof of authorization is required to request the free service on behalf of another person.

Any impacted resident who purchased a mail forwarding service before Aug. 2 can contact Canada Post’s customer service to request a refund.

Jasper’s post office has not been damaged by the wildfires, and all mail still inside will remain there.

Delivery service alerts can be found on Canada Post’s delivery service alerts webpage and its @canadaposthelps X account – formerly known as Twitter.

Canada Post’s customer service team can be reached online or by telephone at 1-866-607-6301 (TTY: 1-800-267-2797).
