Area residents will soon have an opportunity to peruse — and perhaps even purchase — a variety of paintings and drawings.

The Sundre Art Society is hosting its 43rd annual show and sale April 28-29 at the West Country Centre from 1-5 p.m. both days.

The public is welcome to attend free of charge to check out as many as 150 works of art created by more than two dozen local as well as regional artists, said Lila Weiss, the society’s president.

This year’s theme is “harvest time,” so participating artists — who can each showcase several works of art — will be encouraged to submit at least one piece that ties in with that subject. Additionally, anyone who might be interested in displaying his or her work must first become a member of the society. However entering the show is a non-juried process, so anyone can participate provided a membership is obtained, she said.

Most — but not necessarily all — of the art displayed will be available for sale to members of the public who might be interested in sprucing up their home décor, she said.

“The society takes 10 per cent (of the proceeds) to help cover the costs of putting on the show."

The rest goes back to the artists to in turn help them cover their own costs such as materials including frames and paints. The art show and sale will specifically feature traditional art such as paintings and drawings rather than photographs, she said.

The Sundre West Country Centre is the ideal location for the show and sale, and Weiss also said the event will double as a spring tea featuring refreshments and snacks as well as some door prizes.

Although the society is doing well, the group is always receptive to new members, and anyone who might be interested in learning more or joining is welcome to contact Weiss at 403-638-4269, or can alternatively reach Anke Klapp, the organization’s treasurer, at 403-638-2877.
