John (Jack) Smythe was awarded this year's People's Choice Award during the Wellspring Visual ArtNetwork Association's Annual Fall Show and Sale.

The award was for his intricate woodworking pieces of art.

Over the years the Olds artist has made plant stands, magazine racks, baby cradles, desks, an armoire, jewelry boxes, toys and jewelry for his grandchildren and workbenches and cabinets for his shop.

He, like several of the artists involved in Wellspring, is a self-developed craftsman.

The association's annual fall event was held Oct. 27 and 28 at the Olds Rec Centre.

“In spite of the frosty, wintry weather many people came to enjoy the fine artwork presented at this show and sale,” said artist and association member Carroll Smith.

Andrew O'Brien, a photographer from Sundre, was runner-up for the People's Choice Award, getting the nod for his photo of Perth, Scotland.

During the event, Sundre potter David Todd demonstrated his fine work on the pottery wheel and patiently instructed several would-be potters in their pursuit to create an item on the wheel.

Huxley painter Judi Martinez demonstrated her miniatures to the delight of art enthusiasts.

The two artists conducted demonstrations on both the Saturday and Sunday.

Door prize winners included: Nancy Kilpatrick of Olds who won a painting donated by Osi Cruz-Lahtinen; Didsbury's Linda Arthurs who won a Judi Martinez painting; Carol Brown of Sundre who won a silk scarf donated by Betty Caskey; Artha Lee Gill of Olds who won a Judi Martinez painting; and Jack Hastie who won a jewelled silk scarf donated by Carroll Smith.
