DIDSBURY - Local theatre fans are in for a treat as Didsbury Theatre company returns with a performance of Cooking with Gus. The dinner theatre production will feature a meal catered by the Didsbury Elks and a show performed by local thespians.
Cooking with Gus, which was written by Jim Brochu, will go Dec. 14 and 21 at the Didsbury Elks Hall at 1914 20th Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 and the show starting at 8.
Directing the production is Tony Sylvestre, while acting in the show are Tracie Skeet-Brook, Gary Edwards, Karson Dussault and Sydney Gilbert.
Sylvestre said the actors and crew have been working hard for weeks preparing for the big opening.
"Rehearsals are going well," said Sylvestre. "It's coming together nice. It's always a good night out. It's a funny comedy but with also some poignant moments."
Skeet-Brook is more known in artistic circles as a renowned opera singer, however, she is also an accomplished actress.
She produces, directs and stars regularly in a musical theatre revue and operatic concert series through her company ticketor.com/broadwayshowstoppers.
She worked with Sylvestre years ago and is glad to have another opportunity.
"He begged me," joked Skeet-Brook. "He's been working on me for years. I didn't have any gigs going on, so I said sure."
The show, Cooking with Gus, is about a famous food columnist and cookbook author who is offered her own daily network television show but ends up having great stage fright.
"It's a sentimental, yet humourous show I would say," she said. "It has some touching moments but also some very funny moments. Basically, Augusta or Gus is a chef aspiring to be on TV. The man she's been with for years and years has been begging her to marry him but she's just never had the time. She devotes her life to cooking."
Skeet-Brook said her character's common-law husband isn't keen on her having a TV show and he hypnotizes her during a taping of the show.
"After that, I don't want to give it all away but mayhem ensues," she said. "There's a lot of laughter but there are some touching moments too. There's hidden humours where you have to pay attention. It's going to be a great show."
