The Mountain View Film Group began deliberations for its fall film series the evening of July 27 at the Mountain View Museum, welcoming the public to view and vote on a selection of movie trailers being shown.
Organizer Carien Vandenberg and other MVFG regulars welcomed a handful of film enthusiasts to rank their top five picks from a series of 23 movie trailers.
“This is the first time we've opened it up to the community. Usually we have a smaller group. I think it was a huge success – we had eight new faces participating,” said Vandenberg.
Vandenberg said she was happy with the turnout of about 15 people.
“This round of films all looked so interesting and I think the turnout was excellent. The evening was a lovely social gathering.”
“I felt like everyone was engaged, and excited for the opportunity to be a part of the selection.”
The trailers were compiled by the MVFG through research, and suggestions from Film Circuit (a division of the Toronto International Film Festival).
Although the film group's picks are currently being finalized, the seven potential movies include Beginners; The Whistleblower; The Debt; Oranges and Sunshine; Tree of Life; One Day; and The Tree.
A standout from this selection is Beginners, in which a young man (Ewan McGregor) who recently lost his mother is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Christopher Plummer): that he has terminal cancer, and has began a relationship with a much younger man.
The MVFG is currently in discussions with Mayfair Cinema and Film Circuit in Toronto to coordinate schedules and finalize its selections.
Vandenberg said she hopes the final decisions would be made by next week.
“On one hand, we're selecting dates and coordinating with the cinema in town, but we're also trying to finalize which films we've picked with the organizing group that schedules all the communities with the films that they choose.”
Tentative dates are set for Sept. 18, Oct. 23, Nov. 16, and Dec 4 (all Sundays).
The MVFG encourages those interested to keep an eye on its website (part of www.oldsmuseum.ca) for updated information.
In other film group news, the MVFG hopes to bring selections from the Banff Mountain Film Festival to Olds this January for the third consecutive year, and is in the process of facilitating this with representatives.
