One of the biggest Canadian country music stars, George Canyon, is coming to the Big Rack Cow Palace Event Centre May 4 as part the Rotary district conference. The show will also serve as a fundraiser for the Rotary Athletic Park of Olds.

The park is currently under construction just northwest of Walmart.

Joining the singer at the cow palace that night are fellow Canadian country artists Doc Walker and Charlie Major.

“It won’t be my first time, I’ve played Olds before and love coming there of course,” Canyon said. “I’ve played on the campus there. It’s a special place to do shows and we’re really excited to be coming out.”

Canyon said it won’t feature one artist after the other. It will feel more like a kitchen party.

“For me, kitchen parties were just an incredible experience that I took for granted as a kid. Everyone gets together on the weekend, drinking tea, eating biscuits. (They) play songs, talk and tell stories and jokes, just a real family night. That’s kind of what the show is, a kitchen party.

“We plan on having a lot of people on and off stage all night long; it’s not going to be your typical one artist goes on and another goes on after,” said Canyon.

He sees this kitchen party style of show becoming more of the norm with the way the industry is evolving and said he has more fun playing with multiple groups.

In terms of the music we’ll hear, Canyon said it’ll be a lot of hits, but at the end of the night he’ll perform his latest single Out of this Town from his upcoming album.

Canyon is excited that proceeds from his show will go toward the athletic park.

“I’ve been so blessed in my career for 29 years that I try to give back in any way, shape or form I can, and especially when we get to actually do a show and help raise money for a cause," he said.

“I’m a big fan of the Rotary Club. I think it’s a vital part of our culture. They do so much across Canada, so we just feel very honoured that we get to be a part of it,” Canyon said.
