INNISFAIL – One-act productions will once again be in the spotlight.
Innisfail Town Theatre (ITT) is hosting the Heartland Region Alberta Drama Festival Association (ADFA) One Act Festival at the Ol' Moose Hall on April 27.
The adjudicated event is open to anyone 18 and older who lives in the Heartland region area, from Rocky Mountain House to Three Hills and Red Deer to Didsbury.
“We have five entries (this year)," said Terri Hart, festival committee member. "Two from Innisfail, one from Red Deer, one from Sundre and we have a group from Drayton Valley," she added, noting this group will present their one-act production only.
"You have to be within the Heartland region in order to be part of the competition,” she said.
The one-act plays are not restricted to already published scripts or monologues and can include original works, noted Hart, adding all submissions entered into the festival must be a minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes in length.
"They can be original works," she said. "You can be your own writer and bring it to the stage, or you can choose an already established playwright.
“There's criteria that all of the entries have met in order to be there (and a part of the festival),” explained Hart. “The winner will also have to be within the criteria and parameters for the provincial competition as well.”
This is the third consecutive year ITT has hosted the event, said Hart, adding this year’s theme for the festival is ‘celebrate’, marking ADFA’s 50th anniversary and ITT’s 40th anniversary.
"We keep growing from the first time we hosted the event," she said. "It's nice to see a growth and awareness (about the festival). I think it will make for a very interesting evening."
The winners of the One Act Festival will represent the region at the ADFA provincials May 3 and 4 in High River.
"We've enjoyed hosting it and it's been successful," said Hart. "It's been good for theatre, not just within Innisfail but within Central Alberta."
Doors open at 5 p.m. and show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available only at the door.
