Canadian musician Luke McMaster is coming to Olds for the first time, Feb. 27 at the TransCanada Theatre during his Icons of Soul tour.
The Albertan had a chance to speak with McMaster to learn more about his new album and the show he’ll be putting on during his stop in Olds.
McMaster considers Icons of Soul to be the first truly authentic project that he has been a part of.
“I say that because in my career I’ve always been influenced by Motown, starting back when I was growing up in Winnipeg and ended up in a Motown cover band,” said McMaster.
To help make this project authentic, McMaster worked with Motown legend Lemont Dozier.
Icons of Soul is more than just an album as there is a documentary of the same name that was developed in tandem with the album.
The documentary has no firm release date but McMaster anticipates it will be ready in the summer. In the meantime, footage of the film will be shown during the concert.
“When we’re going to do a song we’ll be like, 'instead of telling you about when we wrote the song or when we talked to Lemont about the song, here’s a clip from this documentary and you can see the process.'
“It’s just like an interactive experience that is something I’ve never seen or been a part of.
“It’s just so exciting to come to Olds and be able to share that with people,” McMaster said.
Icons of Soul is set to be the first volume of 13 in a series of albums that McMaster is working on.
The primary focus of the show will be the songs off the new album but McMaster said they’ll play older songs as well.
“A lot of it is the Icons of Soul stuff but we’ll still do songs like Good Morning Beautiful and some stuff from Trending,” said McMaster. “We kind of go through some highlights of some other stuff I’ve done and connect it all to Icons of Soul.”
Tickets for the Wednesday show at the TransCanada Theatre at 7:30 p.m. can be purchased at lukemcmaster.com.
