An Olds High School (OHS) Grade 11 student placed second in musical theatre at the Alberta Music Festival at the end of May.
It was Morgan Jenkin's first time at the provincials, even though she has been participating regularly in the Olds and District Kiwanis Music Festival.
“I have been going to the Olds and District Kiwanis Music Festival since I was nine years old,” said Jenkin.
“I have been taking voice classes for seven years.”
Jenkin performed God Help the Outcasts from the Hunchback of Notre-Dame at the Alberta Music Festival, where she competed in musical theatre ballad 16 and under.
“I was really excited to go. I practised a lot and I got 'er done,” she said.
For the first time in the festival's history, five people placed second.
“I was really nervous because there were 17 performers but it went really well. I was really happy with it,” said Jenkin.
She says she likes singing because it helps her relieve stress and it's a lot of fun. She likes to perform musical theatre songs.
“I like anything from the musical Wicked. I love country music, and anything from the Phantom of the Opera,” said Jenkin.
This year, she also accomplished another first. She participated in the OHS musical Annie Get Your Gun last fall.
Jenkin has been taking voice lessons with local teacher Carla Newsham for more than five years.
“For a student to place in provincials any time, it's wonderful,” said Newsham.
“Provincials in general are just a great experience.”
While Newsham has had quite a few students place second at the Alberta Music Festival, it was the first time a student of hers placed at provincials on the first try.
Jenkin is already thinking about next year's Olds and District Kiwanis Music Festival and OHS musical.
“I am trying to find some songs for next year,” said Jenkin.
“I am going in the Olds High School musical again next school year. I am trying out for Maria in the Sound of Music. I am really excited for that.”
