“Dirt road rock and roll” will be emanating from Tracks Pub in two weeks when the Tom Savage Trio hits the stage on May 24.
“We've got rock in there, alternative country, blues and jam-band elements in the music so it makes for a pretty good live show,” Savage said, noting that the main reason for hitting the road is to test drive a few tunes the band would like to record for a new album.
Savage said he has always played a wide variety of music, and pulling from several different genres is a good way to not get pigeonholed in the same type of music for too long.
Savage counts Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as his early influences, while the songwriting has more of a country theme to it.
“It's like loud country, and then we go off into these jams and stuff,” he said.
In earlier days before the trio was performing together, Savage said he was mostly playing acoustic guitar, but the writing he was doing led to the electric instrument, and that's what was turned out on 2007's The County Line album.
“I was writing these songs (while playing acoustic guitar) around that time and I just (thought that) these tunes need to be plugged in and cranked up … so that's what we did and we kind of … stumbled upon this sound. It makes for an entertaining show because if you're really into guitar, guitar solos and jams … you've got that but then good songwriting on the other side of the coin,” he said.
This will be the TST's fifth trip to Alberta, but the first time to Olds. The local stop will be the first in Alberta — one of about 14 dates in the province.
“Alberta seems to have really responded to the music so we keep coming back,” Savage said.
The tour will last 24 days, with 23 performances.
