DIDSBURY - Buy-Low Foods, the parent company of AG Foods, has announced that it is planning to build a brand new 25,000-square-foot grocery store in Didsbury to replace the existing AG Foods store.
The new store, which the company says will almost double the size and product lineup of the current store, is anticipated to be open next year.
The team at the existing AG Foods location will continue to work hard delivering on their service promise in the existing location while managing the transition to the new location when construction is completed, the company said.
It is expected that this store opening will create approximately 20 to 25 new jobs in the community, in addition to employment generated during the construction and store setup phases of the project, the company said.
"We are thrilled to be making this investment in the fine community of Didsbury," said Buy-Low Foods president Dan Bregg in a press release. "We can't wait to showcase all the new products and services we have to offer to the community when the new store opens next year. In the meantime, we're excited to continue our partnership in the community through our existing team at AG Foods."
The new store will be built in Shantz Crossing, which is located north of Highway 582.
Didsbury mayor Rhonda Hunter said the news of the move is great for the town.
"This is fantastic news for our community and for development in Shantz Crossing and in Didsbury," said Hunter. "It's very exciting for Buy-Low to have selected Didsbury in the location of Shantz Crossing for this development."
Neither Hunter nor the town would confirm nor deny whether the Didsbury Municipal Library would move into the current AG Foods building once it is vacated as has been long rumoured.
"Further comments will come. However, council recognizes this as being Buy-Low's moment and major announcement, and we would like everyone to direct their attention to and celebrate the exciting announcement from Buy-Low Foods," she said.
The Buy-Low (AG) Foods grocery store would be the first tenant in Shantz once it opens next year.
