Aggregate levy changes considered

Mountain View County council has given first and second reading to amendments to the land use bylaw regarding the community aggregate payment levy and what the levy funds will be used for.

Mountain View County council has given first and second reading to amendments to the land use bylaw regarding the community aggregate payment levy and what the levy funds will be used for.

The readings came by way of motion during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

One change reads as follows: “The uniform levy rate for all shipments of aggregate from a pit within the county shall be $0.40 per tonne of aggregate. The amount of the levy for each semi-annual period to be invoiced to an operator shall be determined by multiplying the number of tonnes of aggregate for each half of the year, as shown on the tonnage roll provided to the county, by the uniform levy rate.”

The second change reads as follows: “Use of the community aggregate levy shall be in accordance with Section 409.1(2) of the Municipal Government Act which mandates that the levy shall be used to raise revenue for the payment of infrastructure and other costs within the municipality.”

The amendments are expected to come back to council on April 25 for possible third reading.

In the meantime the county will be sending letters to pit operators in the area seeking comment on the proposed amendments, said Christopher Atchison, director of legislative services.
