The province reported three more people have died of COVID-19, and 19 new cases of coronavirus have been indentified in the past 24 hours.
On Monday, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced 5,979 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Alberta.
There are currently 762 active cases in the province, with 45 people in the hospital and five people in intensive care.
“These deaths are a reminder of the worst-case scenario outcome of this virus and why we need to continue to take this seriously,” Hinshaw said.
While COVID-19 numbers in many areas of the province remained low, Alberta’s top doctor reminded residents the pandemic isn’t over yet.
Alberta is in stage one of three in the relaunching of businesses. The earliest possible date for a stage two relaunch has been marked as June 18, but Hinshaw said they may be able to consider alternate, earlier dates if case numbers remain low. Hinshaw noted there are still some areas of concern in the province, like Calgary and Brooks, that need to be tracked before any decision is made.
Hinshaw said any decisions that are made will be driven by data and said keeping COVID-19 numbers low and following public health measures will be important considerations.
