INNISFAIL - All 42 schools in Chinook's Edge School Division are closed Friday due to the extreme cold temperatures.

The division's Innisfail headquarters is also closed.

As per the inclement weather policy, division officials have declared Jan. 12 a red day.

A red day is declared when the forecast temperature between 7 and 9 a.m. that day, with windchill, is -45 Celsius or colder.  Also, a red day may happen when there is a heavy snowfall or a blizzard warning in effect at that time.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the entire province. Wind chill values between -40 C and -55 are occurring this morning, and will continue through the day, the federal agency said in an update at 4:44 a.m. Friday.

"Our response on red days is to ensure a reasonable level of safety for students, staff and parents who we anticipate are riding a bus, driving or walking to and from school," the division's policy states.

According to the division's policy, students will receive learning opportunities Friday through Google Classroom or as outlined in communication from the student's teacher.
