INNISFAIL - All 42 schools in Chinook's Edge School Division are closed Monday due to the extreme cold temperatures.

The division's Innisfail headquarters is also closed.

A long period of extremely cold temperatures and wind chills continues today. Temperatures ranging from -30 C to -45 C, with wind chills between -40 C and -50 C persist this morning, Environment Canada noted in an update at 5:31 a.m. Monday. Wind chill values could even be a bit colder in open and exposed areas.

As per the inclement weather policy, division officials have declared Jan. 15 a red day.

A red day is declared when the forecast temperature between 7 and 9 a.m. that day, with windchill, is -45 Celsius or colder.  Also, a red day may happen when there is a heavy snowfall or a blizzard warning in effect at that time.

"Our response on red days is to ensure a reasonable level of safety for students, staff and parents who we anticipate are riding a bus, driving or walking to and from school," the division's policy states.

According to the division's policy, students will receive learning opportunities Monday through Google Classroom or as outlined in communication from the student's teacher.
