Area students do well at science fair

Students from the region did very well at the recent Central Alberta Rotary Science Fair at Red Deer College on March 29 and 30.

At the Grade 5 and 6 level, the Best of Fair and gold medal went to Ty McFie, Grade 6 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Splat".

Silver medals went to Kiera Pennell, Grade 6 at Hugh Sutherland School for “Mandela Madness", Georgia Winters, Grade 5 at River Valley School for project “Sugar High”, Zander Ewert, Grade 5 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Eggstra Old vs. Eggstra Fresh”, Kirsten Eskesen and Owen Gibson, Grade 5 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Weathering and Erosion of Rocks”

At the Grade 7 to 12 level, Best of Fair, gold medal, and Trip to Canada Wide Science Fair went to Sophie Petersen, Grade 10 at Olds High School for project “Refueling Our World”.

Gold medal and Trip to Canada Wide Science Fair went to Claire Petersen, Grade 11 at Olds High School for project “Good Thinking or Gut Feeling?”

Silver medals went to Jayce McKean and Gus Reid, Grade 7 at Cremona School for project “That’s a Lot of Damage”, Parker Mogck, Grade 12 at Olds High School for project “A Link in the System”.

Bronze medals went to Kaia Kennedy, Grade 7 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Pain=Stain”, Jules Owen-Pole, Grade 7 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Pencil Ore Inc.”, Tehya Kinghorn, Grade 8 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Kiss a Rose”, Jessica Toews and Avary Hickman, Grade 10 at Olds High School for project “Assessing Mental Health in Adolescents”, Hayley Glass, Grade 7 at Hugh Sutherland School for project “Fire Breathes Life”, and Noah Martens, Grade 11 at Olds High School for project “Nature’s Filters”.

A number of special awards were also presented during the science fair.
