DIDSBURY - With the warmer spring weather it's "batter up" for minor baseball.

The Didsbury association has 120 boys and girls signed up this year in different age groups for ages four to 15.

Ryan Mierke, president of Didsbury Minor Baseball, told the Gazette that registration is up this year.

"Our enrolment has increased by 40 per cent," said Mierke. "Last year was a down year as our bantams played out of town.

"Our registration was all online and we want to thank the Town of Didsbury and the schools for helping us get the word out and promote our program."

Didsbury Minor Baseball teams compete in the Chinook Baseball League and practise or play twice a week with weekends off, said Mierke.

The league consists of teams from nearby towns such as Cremona, Crossfield, Carstairs, Sundre and Olds along with Didsbury.

"That's the allure of the community baseball program," he said. "The competition is close and families have weekends to do other activities, not just sports.

"Every level has one tournament in June with teams taking turns hosting from year to year."

Didsbury baseball has teams at the T-ball level for ages 4 to 6; three rookie teams for ages 7 to 9; three mosquito teams for ages 10 and 11; two peewee teams for ages 12 and 13; and one bantam team for ages 14 and 15. League games begin May 1.
