OILFIELD TRUCKING SAFETY A MUST – Large oilfield trucks make their way through Olds last week. Area motorists are reminded to give such vehicles lots of space.

Anyone encountering the large rigs used in the oil and gas industry in the region can be confident that they are being operated under strict rules and regulations, says Tracey McCrimmon.

The executive director of the Sundre Petroleum Operator’s Group (SPOG), McCrimmon says drivers and operators are highly trained and managed at all times.

“Our companies have extremely comprehensive safety programs that these operators have to meet in order to work for them,” said McCrimmon. “They have very specific protocols in place and the public should feel safe that they are operating under stringent requirements.”

“When they are operating in the industry they have to follow the safety protocols that our member companies have in place. There are very strong safety requirements that all service companies have to meet.”

SPOG is a collection of oil and gas companies with operations in the Sundre area.

Many of the trucks used in the region are operated by service companies under contract to SPOG companies, hauling oil and other fluids.

“Some of the companies have their own trucks, but for the most part, they are operated by the service companies,” she said.

Large transport trucks have always been an integral part of the oil and gas industry, and that’s unlikely to change any time soon, she says.

“A lot of our product is being moved through road truck transport,” she said.
