Big runoff on the way

Mountain View County residents and visitors are being encouraged to call the county office if they encounter flooding over roadways in the district in the coming days.

Mountain View County residents and visitors are being encouraged to call the county office if they encounter flooding over roadways in the district in the coming days.

With temperatures expected to be above freezing for at least the next week, there could be widespread melting and potential overland flooding.

“Winter has pushed so far into spring now that a lot of the culverts are frozen, so that will build up water and it will run over the roads,” said Ron Baker, director of operations with the county.

“In 2014 we had a lot of roads get washed out and culverts got washed out because of that. We could see that again.

“If you see water running over the road or roads getting damaged, just phone the county number.”

The county will typically close the flooded sections of roadways to allow the water to move freely, he said.
“We have to wait until the road thaws out and we can get in there to repair it,” he said. “People can expect some road detours. Typically when you are driving along you could run into road closures and detours.”

County road staff expected to be addressing overland flooding concerns across the municipality, he said.

“We have three steamers and we expect them to be going full time once this runoff starts,” he said. “We will be doing regular road patrols.

“This time last year half the fields were brown. Now they are white with snow. If we even go to normal temperatures we are going to see a big melt in a hurry.”

The county’s office number is 403-335-3311.
